Gardening clinic @ Red Lane community allotments: 12th September

Not a great turn out today, but still a good day all in all. The first people to turn up were the media team who took pictures of the site with a view to sticking the pictures on a steel framed billboard to promote food growing in the local area, then one by one the growers slowly began to turn up at the site to work on their respective plots. thinking about winter

Today I gave one of the growers some overwintering onions and hardy winter cabbage plants from my own stock at home, this led onto some good conversations about winter vegetable growing. So during the next week I will visit our local garden centre for overwintering garlic and onions to give to the rest of the Red Lane growers at our next session in three weeks time. We also discussed some of the activities that we will be doing over winter at the site, we agreed that light tree pruning, fruit tree grafting, making insect and bird boxes and painting the raised beds would be a good start.
